Priene and its surroundings in Late Antiquity and the Byzantine Period

Due to the lack of archaeological information our image of byzantine cities has mainly been shaped by the interpretation of literary sources. Based upon a regional survey of the Mykale carried out by Prof. H. Lohmann and fieldwork within the city of Priene undertaken by the author within the framework of the DAI Priene excavations under the direction of Prof. W. Raeck, this project aims to reassess the development of Priene and its surroundings during the Late Roman and Byzantine period (5th – 13th cent.). The relatively modest size of Priene allows for a much denser collection of archaeological information than would have been possible within the larger urban sites. The complementary analysis of the urban space of Priene and the spatial organization of its surroundings results in a new perspective on the historical development of the Priene region. This results in a much more dynamic history than the common narrative of decline and might lead to a reassessment of urban history within Asia Minor during the Byzantine period.
